He was imprisoned in San Pedro de Cardena with Londoner Dougal Eggar. While in prison, they were brought out to meet a press party visiting the prison.Among this party was Kim Philby, the British Intelligence Officer and Soviet Double Agent, who was ostensibly visiting Spain as a correspondent for The Times. Philby apparently took both prisoners' home addresses and promised to write to their families, but never did so.
