Volunteer of the Week: Nicholas Myroniuk

Nicholas MyroniukNicholas Myroniuk was a Ukrainian Canadian blacksmith and mechanic. He lived in Vancouver and Alberta, and was involved with the Communist Party of Canada and the Young Communist League from 1936 onward. He was also active in the Relief Project Workers’ Union, the Single Workers’ Union, and was involved in riots and fights.

Before going to Spain, he had brief military experience as a member of the Canadian Militia, where he spent 14 weeks in the Alberta Mounted Rifles.

He arrived in Spain in October 1937, where he served with the 24th Battalion and later as a Commissar, Corporal, and Sergeant in the Mackenzie Papineau Battalion. He was wounded in July 1938 at the crossing of the Ebro. He survived, and returned to Canada in 1939.
