Volunteer of the Week - Charles Friend

Our volunteer of the week is Charles "Chick" Friend of Hamilton. Born in 1910, Friend worked in textiles and joined the Communist Party of Canada in 1935, later working for the party's newspaper, the Daily Clarion.

Friend arrived in Spain 23 June, 1937, where he attended Officers' Training School and served with the Mackenzie Papineau Battalion. He was reported missing in action in March 1938, and was believed to have been captured and executed.
